Home / Wrinkles: What are Wrinkles
Posted on August 21, 2007 in Latest News
A wrinkle is a ridge or crease on the surface of the skin. Skin wrinkling occurs mainly due to aging process. It is also said to occur due to continuous immersion of a body part in warm water, the effect of this wrinkling is temporary however.
When a person is young, he or she doesn’t have wrinkles because the skin does a great job of stretching and holding in of moisture. The middle layer of the skin called Dermis has fibers called Elastin and a protein called Collagen which play an important part in prevention of wrinkles. However some people in their 20s have little wrinkles around their eyes (called “crow’s feet”) from squinting or spending too much time in the Sun.
When the Dermis looses both Collagen and Elastin, the skin gets thinner and has trouble getting enough moisture to the Epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. This causes the Epidermis to sag, and wrinkles are formed.
This is a natural phenomenon of the aging process. However, there are some people who even in their 50’s sport a supple and smooth skin, without a trace of any wrinkles. This is because of the good care they have taken of their skin. It may also be due to Good Genes, which means their family members have less wrinkles.
Everyone eventually end up sporting a few wrinkles with age. Proper skin care and diet helps control wrinkles to a great extent.
