What Causes Wrinkles?

As all of us know aging is related to wrinkles. Before we try to understand what causes wrinkles and how to prevent wrinkle formation we need to understand how aging affects your skin.

In fact there are two types of aging processes that can lead to the formation of wrinkles. One is intrinsic aging – aging due to internal factors like genes. Another is extrinsic aging – aging due to external environmental factors like sun exposure.

Intrinsic Aging

The natural aging process starts in the mid-20s. The collagen production in the skin slows down and the elastin that gives elasticity to your skin gets a little less spring. Then the real aging of the skin starts. But the aging shows on you only after few decades. There are various signs of intrinsic aging – fine wrinkles, hair loss, dry skin, sagging skin due to bone loss, etc.

Your genetics decide when the real aging starts. For some the aging my start in 20s, for some in 30s, and for some it may happen in 50s. In case of people with Werner’s syndrome the aging process advances to 30s.

Extrinsic Aging

There are several external factors that can influence aging in you. Sun exposure is considered to be the major cause for aging. Several other factors like facial expressions, gravity, smoking, and sleeping positions also contribute to aging.
