Alpha Hydroxy Acids For Wrinkles

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) are widely used in skin care products which are used to reduce wrinkles. These are derived from food products such as sugarcane, apple and milk. Alpha hydroxy acids work by penetrating the skin and improving the skin tone.

Derivation of Alpha Hydroxy Acids:

Alpha hydroxy acids are derived from sugarcane, apples, milk, oranges, grapes, and lemons. Some of the simple AHAs are lactic acid, citric acid, and mandelic acid. These derivatives are used in cleansers, moisturizers, toners and chemical peels to reduce wrinkles.

How Do Alpha Hydroxy Acids Work?

Unlike other beauty products which improve the outer appearance, AHAs penetrate the skin and improve the skin tone. AHAs primarily work as exfoliants – they remove the outer dead cells on the epidermis and encourage the growth of new cells. This process also helps in unclogging of the pores and clearing the skin.

Alpha hydroxy acids are also believed to stimulate the production of elastin and collagen – which play an important role in maintaining the firmness of skin. Thus in the process of exfoliation, it is helpful in reducing the skin wrinkles. AHAs can also reduce acne, pigmentation and acne scars.

Side-effects of AHAs include skin redness, burning, itchiness, and pain.  To reduce the side-effects, the concentration of alpha hydroxy acids should be less than 10% in the product. The pH should be higher than 3.5.

Alpha hydroxy acids for wrinkles is an effective option. Using products containing AHAs can smoothen out your skin and give a new look.
