Fingers wrinkle when the hands are exposed to water for long periods of time. Few people develop these wrinkles pretty quickly. What causes wrinkled fingers? It is caused due to the absorption of water into the skin.
The skin of the palm is thicker than the other parts of the body. Also, the outer skin layer of the palm is tightly attched to the lower layer. When the fingers are exposed to water, the outer skin layer of the palm absorbs water and it expands. However, the lower layer remains of the same size. The expansion of the outer layer is believed to be the reason behind finger wrinkles
Recently scientists have concluded that there is more to wrinkled fingers than simple water absorption. They have found out that finger wrinkles are caused due to the constriction of the blood vessels in response to the water. The skin structures are pulled downwards, thereby resulting in wrinkled fingers.
People who sweat more and more prone to wrinkled fingers. Hot and humid environments can also aggravate the wrinkling of fingers.
