Facial Lines and Wrinkles

Wrinkles are also called as

“rhytides”

. Fine lines and wrinkles on the face are the consequences of growing age. These appear inevitably over time. Wrinkles can sometimes be the signs for healthy skin. These wrinkles are severe depending on the genetic tendency, exposure to environment and, also skin photo type. As the skin becomes dry and thin, the lines on the face and also wrinkles are formed.

Dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons classified the facial lines and wrinkles using the Glogau’s classification.

Mild:

Few wrinkles. This can be covered by slight makeup or even without makeup.

Moderate:

Early wrinkling. This requires little makeup to cover the wrinkles.

Advanced:

Persistent wrinkling and discoloration of the skin due to broken blood vessels. This type of wrinkles need makeup.

Severe:

heavy wrinkles and furrows. This always requires makeup but this cannot hide the changes in the age.

Fitzpatrick classified wrinkles according to the wrinkles around the eyes and mouth.

Class I:

Fine wrinkles.

Class II:

Fine to moderate wrinkles.

Class III:

Moderate wrinkles to deep wrinkles and folds on the skin.

Formation of Facial lines and Wrinkles:

  • Irregular thickening of dermis is one of the causes for facial lines and even the epidermis holds less amount of water. These lines are mainly caused due to exposure to environmental toxins for incidence tobacco smoke and also exposure to sun.
  • Wrinkles are caused due to process of aging, muscle movement, acne, surgery, injury, gravity, smoking, skin diseases and damage of skin due to sun.
  • Care should be taken in the young age to avoid premature wrinkles. Drinking plenty of water and not exposing the skin to sun may help to prevent premature wrinkles.
