New Treatments for Facial Wrinkles

Good news for those suffering with facial wrinkles. New treatment is available for fine lines and wrinkles. It was approved by

Food and Drug Association

(FDA) of United States in December 2003. A new gel

is used for filling wrinkles. This gel is prepared with

hyaluronic acid

According to the studies of the manufacturer of Restylane, this is an effective way to fill moderate wrinkles to deep wrinkles. This gel is used to fill the wrinkles around the mouth and nose. One injection is sufficient for optimal correction but more than 2/3’s required more than one injection. This lasts for six months.

FDA approved two more products for treatment of wrinkles.

  • One is collagen injection. Collagen injections correct the deficiencies in soft tissues like wrinkles and scars caused by acne.
  • Second is the Botulinum toxin. This is used for the treatment of frown lines between eyebrows.
  • FDA approved Restylane gel as a treatment for facial wrinkles based on the clinical studies done by manufacturers and also on the recommendations of General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel of FDA.

138 patients suffering with nasolabial folds are injected with Restylane gel on one side of the face and the other with Zyplast (bovine collagen product). After 6months, the results of Restylane and Zyplast were comparable.

Fourteen days after treatment, patients reported that they suffered with severe redness, tenderness, incidence of bruising, swelling and, pain on the Zyplast treated side. This treatment is given to Caucasian women. Caucasian women are those who do not smoke and are less exposed to harmful radiation of sun. There is only limited study on the safety of non Caucasian women.

Other treatments for facial wrinkles include chemical peels, laser resurfacing treatments, topical creams and, electrosurgical resurfacing treatments.
