How Does Skin Aging Process Occur

Skin aging process is prominently seen on the face. Several factors such as sun exposure and loss collagen and elastin promotes aging. This article describes about the aging process, different types of aging and few facts about aging.

Skin Aging Process

  • Aging is of two different types intrinsic and extrinsic aging. Intrinsic aging is caused by inherited genes. Extrinsic aging is provoked by external factors such as sun exposure.
  • Intrinsic aging generally begins in the mid 20s. At this age, elastin and collagen production is slowed down. These components are vital for healthy skin. Dead skin is not shed quickly and the new skin cells are produced at a very slow rate.
  • Some most common signs of intrinsic aging include development of fine lines, loss of fat, thin and dry skin.
  • Extrinsic aging is caused by external factors. Sun rays are the most important cause for the development of premature wrinkles. Other factors such as sleeping positions, smoking and facial expressions also matter.
  • Sun exposure even for a short period of time causes rough skin, blotchy complexion, loose skin and age spots. A term called photo-aging is used to describe this type of aging. Photo-aging is dependent on two most important factors, firstly skin color and the other factor includes history of sun exposure.
  • Photo-aging causes the loss of skin’s ability to repair. Repeated exposure to UV rays poses damage to collagen and elastin. It impairs the collagen production and the skin becomes leathery and loose much earlier than age.
  • Other factors such as tanning, smoking, deficiency of minerals and vitamins and overuse of cosmetics also affect the process of aging.

Skin Aging Facts

  • There is loss of skin resistance towards environmental factors and allergens.
  • Skin looses proteoglycans that hold moisture in the skin.
  • The number of blood vessels in the skin decreases and skin looses its shine and glow.
  • Hormonal changes also causes the skin to age.
  • Loss of fat is another factor that promotes aging.
