Anti Aging Antioxidants for Wrinkles

Antioxidants are vital for eliminating the free radicals that damage the skin. Anti-aging antioxidants are the ones that help in preventing aging process. Antioxidants are rich in fruits, vegetables, plant extracts and is available in the form of supplements.

  • Plant nutrients are vital for slowing down the process of aging. Vegetables, plant extracts and fruits have chemical components called as phytochemicals. These phytochemicals are important for skin health.
  • Antioxidants are class of phytonutrients. They work by supplying oxygen to the molecules that are lacking it. If antioxidants do not supply the oxygen to the free radicals, these molecules take the oxygen molecule from another compound that is intact and healthy. Thereby, making the healthy molecule also a free radical. The free radicals so produced cause damage to the healthy skin cells.
  • Free radicals damage the skin in three ways. They destroy fatty skin layer that is important for skin’s structure. They alter the DNA and cause the development of sagging skin and wrinkles. Due to altered DNA, collagen and elastin do not function properly. Free radicals are responsible for cross linking of collagen in the skin layer dermis. Due to cross linking, collagen and elastin thickens , becomes hard and they bind together. Thereby, skin sags and the expression lines become a permanent fixture.
  • Antioxidants are most commonly found in vitamins, supplements and minerals. Most important antioxidants include selenium, vitamin A, E and C. Foods like tomatoes, acai, blueberries, eggs, carrots, citrus fruits, sweet potatoes, shell fish and broccoli are rich sources of antioxidants.
  • Antioxidants are now components of many anti wrinkle creams. The most important antioxidant components in these creams include co-enzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid and vitamins A, E and C.
  • Apart from taking foods that are rich in anti aging antioxidants, there is a need to avoid exposure to carcinogens, heavy metals, toxins and pollutants.
