Alpha Hydroxy Acids for Skin Wrinkles

Skin wrinkles pose an ugly appearance to the face and makes one look older. Several treatment procedures are available. One of the treatment option is use of alpha hydroxy acids. This article explains about the effectiveness and most common side effects of alpha hydroxy acids.

These acids are widely used in various skin care products due to their effectiveness. They are prepared from milk and fruit sugars. Lactic acid and glycolic acid are the two most popularly used acids due to their ability to penetrate effectively into the skin. Five different kinds of alpha hydroxy acids are used in skin care preparations. They include citric acid, malic acid, glycolic acid, tartaric acid and lactic acid.

How do They Work

These acids act as ex-foliants and remove the dead skin cells of the epidermis. Thereby, promoting the growth of newer skin cells in place of dead cells. They aid in wrinkle reduction by promoting elastin and collagen production in the body. They help in improving rough and photo-damaged skin. They work effectively if their concentration is 5-8% in a cream.

How to Choose an Alpha Hydroxy Acid Containing Cream

  • Try to opt for a cream that has proper concentration of hydroxy acid in it.
  • Alpha hydroxy acid with a moisturizer base should be used.
  • Avoid use of moisturizers that come in combination with sunscreen, as sunscreen is inactive at a pH where this acid is effective.

Side Effects

  • When using alpha hydroxy acids it is necessary that you protect yourself from sun. As exposure makes you more prone to wrinkles rather than their prevention. So, while using these acids there is a need to apply a sunscreen when out in the sun for a longer duration of time. You can also wear hats for added external protection.
  • These acids should not be used after applying make up powder as it causes your make up to become splotchy and uneven. It is better to apply it before bedtime.
  • Some side effects such as scarring, itching, redness, pain and burning are more commonly seen. In case of dark skin color use of it may result in scarring.
