Factors That Promote Skin Wrinkles

Wrinkles occur normally as age progresses. Apart from the normal aging process, other factors such as sun exposure, smoking, constant facial expressions, free radicals and light skin type are the most important reasons for developing skin wrinkles.

Factors Promoting Skin Wrinkles

  • Sun exposure is the most important factor that is responsible for development of wrinkles. Mostly the UV rays effect the skin. They cause damage to collagen present in the skin. Collagen is essential for maintaining proper skin structure. So, it is necessary to apply a sunscreen when you are out in the sun. A sunscreen with minimum SPF of 15 should be used.
  • The second factor promoting wrinkles is smoking. Smoking causes the release of free radicals that cause damage to skin proteins. It is responsible for causing dehydration. Thereby, promoting the loss of moisture from the skin. Smoking is responsible for activation of a gene that is known to promote premature wrinkles.
  • Habitual facial expression that we tend to perform regularly is known to provoke facial wrinkles. Constant facial expressions causes the loss of skin’s elasticity and fine lines begin to appear. These so formed lines will develop further and lead to wrinkles that permanently remain on the skin.
  • Free radicals produced from factors such as pollution, UV rays and smoking also cause ugly creases on the skin. Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause damage to the cellular functions. They break the collagen proteins that are present in the skin and cause the loss of skin’s strength. Antioxidants are the ones that help in fighting against free radicals. So, there is a need to include antioxidant containing foods or should apply a cream that is rich in antioxidants.
  • People with light skin type are more prone to skin wrinkles.
  • Recreational and occupational habits such as golfing, farming and sailing may also effect the development of wrinkles on the skin.
