What Factors Cause Collagen Degradation?

Collagen is a vital protein that is essential for maintaining skin structure. However, several factors such as sun exposure, smoking, lack of vitamin C and aging contribute to collagen degradation within the body. Therefore, there is a need to carefully analyze those factors and try to avoid them at the earliest.

Factors Promoting Collagen Degradation

  • Smoking:

Smoking is factor that accelerates aging to a large extent. It adds fine lines on a younger looking skin. Smoking affected the rate of synthesis of collagen 111 and collagen1 in the skin. Lower growth rate of collagen means, the skin loses tensile strength and permanently sags. So, it is necessary to stop smoking at the earliest in order to prevent premature wrinkling of the skin.

  • Vitamin C:

It is a vitamin that is necessary to provide stability to collagen molecules. Without the adequate amounts of this vitamin collagen synthesis comes to a still and leads to a condition called as scurvy. Thereby, leading to bruising and loose teeth. As our body is incapable of producing vitamin C there is a need to include foods that are rich in this vitamin. Vitamin C rich foods include red peppers, strawberries and citrus fruits.

  • Aging:

It is the most important factor that promotes collagen degradation in the body. Loss of skin strength and elasticity will lead to sagging skin.

  • Sun exposure:

Overexposure to sun will lead to the degradation of elastin and collagen in the body. These two proteins are vital for maintaining structural integrity of the skin. However, you can apply a sunscreen if you want to prevent damage due to sun rays. Tanning booths should be avoided as they cause skin damage more rapidly. The UVA light that is used in tanning booths penetrate much deeper into the skin when compared to natural sunlight. Thereby, causing deeper skin damage.

You can improve your collagen production by taking vitamin C rich diet, by applying vitamin C containing creams and intake of vitamin A and E rich foods.
