What Causes Wrinkles

Wrinkles are grooves, thin creases and sagging skin. It is generally on the surface of the skin and may also be deep inside. Wrinkles are not harmful to the body and thus cannot be termed as a disease. However, the main problem with wrinkles is that it makes the skin as well the face less attractive. People look older when they have wrinkles. On the other hand people get wrinkles when they become old. There are, of course, other causes of wrinkles as well.

The following are the main reasons which cause wrinkles:

Growing age:

As a person ages skin cells divide slowly. The inner skin or dermis starts to thin. Fat cells beneath the cells as well as the underlying network of elastin and collagen fibres, which provides scaffolding for the surface layers, loosens. Skin looses its resilience and as a result cannot come back to its original position if it is pressed.

Small muscle contraction:

The wrinkles between the eye brows or the frown lines and the crow’s feet (lines radiating from the corner of eyes) are caused due to the contraction of the small muscles. However, this also happens due to growing age.

Habitual Facial Expressions:

Sometimes habitual facial expressions also cause the formation of wrinkles. The formation of jowls and drooping eyelids are the results of the habit.

Exposure to Sunlight:

Wrinkles may also occur due to excessive exposure to sunlight. The damage that is caused by the exposure to ultraviolet rays emanating from the sun is called “sun damage”. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight accounts for about 90% of the symptoms of premature skin ageing.

Smoking:

Smoking is another factor which causes wrinkles. Smoking is harmful to many of the structures of the skin. Therefore, smokers are likely to have premature ageing of the skin.

Family History and Genes:

Some people are more prone to have quicker ageing of skin than others. This actually happens due to the genetic effect. If quick ageing of the skin is common in a particular family than the descendants of the family are more prone to have it.

Rapid Weight Loss:

Rapid loss of weight also causes wrinkles. The rapid withering away of fat from under the skin makes the skin sag. It is generally seen after child birth or a weight loss operation.

Gender factor:

According to some studies, women are more prone to wrinkles than men. They are also more distressed than men because of wrinkles.

Following are some things people can do to prevent wrinkles on their face:

  • Avoid being too exposed to sun rays. At least avoid going to sun during the hours when it is the hottest i.e., between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have to go out during that hour, use Sun Protection Factor (SPF) solutions. Use these solutions after swimming or any sport which makes you sweat.
  • Avoid smoking. Smoke deprives your skin from retaining moisture and causes early wrinkles.
  • Avoid going to the tanning salon. The ultraviolet rays in the tanning booth are as bad as UV rays from the sun.
  • Moisturize your dry skin, especially during months when the weather is drier.
  • Drink a lot of water to supply necessary moisture to your skin.
